First hour: Lateral Puzzle

Lateral puzzles are puzzles that challenge your thinking and help you develop skills in questioning, deduction and logic. Lateral puzzles do not have one correct answer, but there is an answer provided in the book. Your job is to think as many possible solutions that explain the question. When we use lateral puzzles in small groups, you can ask questions, but since you cannot ask a question and have an immediate response on the blog, I will post the clues as well. ASK QUESTIONS on the blog or OFFER POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS. REMEMBER THAT THESE PUZZLES SHOULD CHALLENGE YOUR THINKING!

A man waved his hands in the air and this action cost him $30,000. Why?

CLUES:
(1) He wasn't at an auction.
(2) He waved to his fans and onlookers.

Was the guy a certain cowboy that performs in new york, new york who might have been fined by the police for how he dressed?

No, but good guess. Think about people who make a lot of money quickly.

The Robot was always waving his arms about shouting "Danger, Will Robinson!". He was a runner, and took $30000 that wasn't his and lost it gambling.- CSI episode 11

"Danger, Will Robinson" is originally from "Lost in Space" but Sara (from CSI)said this before Grissom (also from CSI)blew up smoke at Fahrenheit 932

BSP, that's okay!!! I want you to read the other postings and respond!! That is the whole purpose of blogging!!! To see what everyone else has to say!

BSP, I need more specifics about the poker player.

JTS, that is not the answer that the book has, but since this is a lateral puzzle, your answer WOULD work. Could you explain for the other students what that "incident" was, and how much the player was actually fined?

OH!! And CBR, your guess was the closest about the robot and running. Take out the robot, and you have it! But follow through with the thought process...why would it matter if the runner was waving?

Was this football player giving up because he got extremely hurt and his medical bill cost a fortune.

The wide receiver for New Orleans had a cell phone hidden in the endzone padding when he scored a touchdown he pulled it out and pretended to call somebody. He was fined 30 K.

Okay, so CBR was right about it being a runner. Think about what a runner does when he(she) waves in respect to what he(she) is TRYING to do.

JTS, is that amount exact? How crazy is that? Can you find evidence?

I am so excited!!!

That was what was reported in the paper.

That is great! We'll have to find the newspaper citation, and then write the lateral thinking book authors to share!!! How cool!!!!
